The Story Behind This Song

True story. We'd just finished gator hunting in the Florida swamps — not exactly where you'd expect a love story to start. No tent. No plan. Just JT with a grin and a dare saying "trust me darlin, there's a hammock up there." And he hung me in a tree. In the swamp. With gators in the water below.

I should have been terrified. Hogs moving in the shadows. Crickets and frogs screaming. Swamp breath everywhere. But I wasn't scared. Not even a little. Then I fell out of the hammock, hit the sand hard, and he just laughed, took my hand, pulled me close and kissed me. Danger everywhere — but peace was mine.

The most unlikely place for a love story became the most unforgettable night. What happened in the dark? Only the gators know.

Lyrics

Mangroves and moonlight
Mangroves and moonlight
Boat rockin’ slow, heat stickin’ just right

Mangroves and moonlight
Gators in the water, stars hangin’ tight
What happened in the dark
Only the gators know

First trip, no tent, just a grin and a dare
Said you trust me darlin there’s a hammock up there
Hung me in the trees like you knew I would stay
Country boy smilin while I gently sway

Mangroves and moonlight
Mangroves and moonlight
I shoulda been scared but I wasn’t that night

Mangroves and moonlight
What happened in the dark
Only the gators know

Crickets and frogs sing low and wild
Hogs movin shadows, swamp breath mild
Shoulda been scared in that kind of place
But every fear fell right off my face

Fell out the hammock, hit the sand hard
You just laughed, took my hand, pulled me close to your heart
Kissed my mouth soft said girl you’re fine
Danger everywhere but peace was mine

Mangroves and moonlight
Mangroves and moonlight
Sweat on skin, salt in the night

Mangroves and moonlight
Mangroves and moonlight
I shoulda been scared but I wasn’t that night

Mangroves and moonlight
Mangroves and moonlight
Mangroves and moonlight
Mangroves and moonlight

Only the gators know
