The Story Behind This Song

Christmas in the mountains. The kind of cold that makes you grateful for warmth, and the kind of snow that makes everything look like it's been forgiven. I wrote this thinking about the holidays that hurt and the ones that healed — and how sometimes they're the same one.

Lyrics

Smoky Mountain snow keeps fallin’… fallin’…
We kept the fire burnin’ all night long.
Smoky Mountain snow keeps fallin’… fallin’…
But we were warm where we belonged.

Snowed in a cabin, the world shut out,
No money, no gifts, no lights, no doubt.
Hot dogs and mac, that was our feast,
But love by the fire was all we’d need.

Smoky Mountain snow keeps fallin’… fallin’…
We kept the fire burnin’ all night long.
Smoky Mountain snow keeps fallin’… fallin’…
But we were warm where we belonged.

They said we’d never make it, but they don’t know,
We made love on the rug while the embers glowed.
Stone hearth cracklin’, sparks in the air,
The whole world was gone — and we didn’t care.

Smoky Mountain snow keeps fallin’… fallin’…
We kept the fire burnin’ all night long.
Smoky Mountain snow keeps fallin’… fallin’…
But we were warm where we belonged.
(Yeah, we were warm… where we belonged…)
